RENE MENDES FRANCE (1888-1985) SIGNED FRENCH LARGE FAUVISM OIL PAINTING (c. 1920)

A very beautiful large oil on canvas depicting two bathers at the Bay of Le Pouldu in Finistere Brittany. This work is of great interest due to the technique and the period - the work dates to around 1915 - 1920 and shares some influence with the works of fauvism authors and other notable pioneers of the time. It comes with an original gilded frame from early 20th C. Just the frame is worth several hundred dollars. Subject:"Bathers at Le Pouldu - Finistere, Brittany".

Size:24 x 29 inches unframed / 29 x 34 framed. Condition: Some old restoration marks, relined - otherwise very nice.

Born 27 June 1888, in Paris; died 1985. The author was a very well-know painter, engraver of his time.

Mendès-France also executed portraits, Spanish landscapes, the Forest of Fontainebleau and historical scenes. He was one of the promoters of'Effusionism'. From 1920, he exhibited his work in Paris at the Salon des Indépendants, which he then left to found the Salon des Surindépendants, of which he remained president for many years. In 1929, he exhibited Black Birds, Jazz, and Large Organs.
