French antique oil canvas Joseph Touranjon Still life 1890-1910 Art deco signed
This is an interesting work, undated but we believe to be painted around the turn of the century (1900) showing an androgynous figure, statue in the background on a substantial marble base, with a distinctly art deco feel to her (early for the art deco period) with a vibrant, explosion of colour in the foreground provided by a collection of Nasturtiums gathered together in an antique ceramic vase. It is against a dark ground, almost black which creates an effect of pulling us into the painting to discover more- we can see upon closer viewing the reflection of the vase on the polish of the table, also the edge of what appears to be a painted frame at the lower edge. There is a feeling that this was a painting slightly ahead of it's time - by an artist that produced limited diverse works. The frame we believe to be the original frame to the painting. Condition - The painting is in good antique condition, it was painted on a relatively coarse piece of natural linen, (we like this it adds texture and interest to the composition) stretched on a wooden frame- the oils have been varnished over, There is no damage to the painting or loss of paint or fading.
