Extra-Large Traditional Japanese Hannya Mask Signed with Backboard Kagura Mask

Iwami Kagura is a traditional performance coming from Shimane prefecture, Japan. Masks used in Iwami Kagura are made out of a special type of paper known as "sekishu washi". Sekishu Washi is considered a luxury item in Japan due to the laborious processed required to create it. Iwami Kagura masks such as this are made by craftsmen that follow traditional methods and are primarily used in performances or as decorations. This mask was specifically made as a decorative art object, rather than a performance piece.
