Antique Mid Century Modern WPA Realism Barnum Circus Jester Painting, Signed

This is a gorgeously rendered and intriguing Antique Mid Century Modern WPA Realism Barnum Circus Jester Painting, gouache or pastels on paper, by Los Angeles commercial artist and portrait painter D. This work depicts a chiseled and handsome circus clown (dressed more like a harlequin or jester in my opinion,) with face paint and a checkered shirt, holding a paint brush in one hand as he gazes to the side, away from the viewer. Behind him to the right, you can see a circus animal wagon that partially reads: Bar[num] Shows. " Over his shoulder are several large circus tents, and to the left of the image is a wooden wall or door which partially reads: "[Ring]ling Bros & David's Circus. This painting is incredibly detailed and realistic, with extremely fine brush strokes and attention to detail.

Reynolds 1978 in the lower right. This is peculiar, because I have NO IDEA what this could possibly be a copy of. Perhaps this is a copy of "something, " but maybe the original no longer exists. For all intents in purposes, this may now be the only one out there.

This may be a painting that is based off of a photograph. Approximately 30 1/4 x 36 1/4 inches including frame. Actual visible artwork is approximately 23 1/4 x 29 1/4 inches. A label on the verso reads: D. Specializing - Air Brush retouching and portraits.

I could not find much information on this painter, but perhaps you know more about him or his work? Good condition, with some light scuffing, edge wear, and scratches to the original period gilded frame. Please check my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
