I love old French/Belgian interior oil paintings, so often an artist's record of his own home. This one is neatly conceived and decorated, and precisely rendered with much detail.
Caught in balance and display, paintings, a deer's head, a large tea service and small room heating stove, several paintings and a chair, clock commode and table - and a medieval spear. And remarkable attention paid to the delicate flowers in the celadon vase beside the chair. It's still in the original and lovely old French frame, wood with heavy gilded gesso, one corner area needed a little restoration (or is it just one more indication of the art). Something in this one just pulls one back in and through it. It has a puzzle quality to it, and much sentiment!Found in France, of course. Full measurements noted on the photos. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, one gets the impression this one moved many times along with its owner, reminder of a favorite space, or a longtime home and possessions - perhaps a childhood home?
Dates late-1800s, age to the frame and the old wooden stretcher upon which the canvas remains. That old frame is very heavy, solid old forest growth wood. There are, visible in our photos, a few surface abrasions you'll want to touch up perhaps. I've heard some say oil crayons can work, though it's not how we do painting restoration. We're easy to deal with.
